Sword & Sorceress 22 Interviews - the Kimberly L. Maughan edition
Oct. 31st, 2007 | 09:01 am
We are pleased to present a short interview with Kimberly L. Maughan, who wrote "The Ironwood Box" for Sword & Sorceress 22. Like Sarah Dozier
, Kimberly made her first sale to S&S 22.
1.) Tell us a bit about yourself.
The basics: I was born in Arizona , but I’ve lived in Texas, Illinois, Indiana, and South Carolina . I got my BA at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN, and I’m currently working my way through my masters in Library and Information Science here in SC. I’ve had a familiar litany of jobs up to this point: administrative assistant, bank teller, nanny, bookseller, but I’ve always wanted to write. This story is my first publication.
The not-so-basic: I’m a dog-person. Tequila is my favorite drink. I’m addicted to internet quizzes. I love Kant and Wittgenstein, classic rock, and the desert. And I read waaaay too many historical romances.
2.) What made you take up writing?
I don’t know, actually. I’ve been writing since before I could hold a pen---I used to dictate stories to my dad---and while I thought about being a dolphin trainer (age 5), math teacher (age 12), and librarian (age 27), writing and being a writer, a fantasy novelist, has always been part of the picture.
3.) Tell us about your S&S 22 story.
It’s the story of three sisters trying to reclaim their home and their old life, even though one of the sisters isn’t sure either is a good idea. Much of the sisters comes from my own family: I’m one of three sisters, myself, and the characters seem to have gotten more than their hair colors from us. (We, like Pansy, Lily, and Rose are a blonde, a red head, and a brunette.)
4.) Can you share an appropriate teaser paragraph from your story (75-150 word range)?
::singing:: “Let’s start at the very beginning…a very good place to start…”
“She’d been dreaming of the box for near a week now, waking each night to itching palms and a restlessness that would not subside until she’d risen from her bed, padded through the darkness to the loft where Lily slept, and cooled her hands on the fine, ironwood grain of the box. It had been a week of dreams, she knew, because every night she passed the tiny window in the loft, open to the soft spring air, and watched as the moon grew from sliver to quarter. What she did not know, and could not understand, was why she was dreaming of the box at all.”
