short and quick

Apr. 25th, 2007 | 11:53 pm

Finished a very short story today, "For a Glass of Fine Scotch" at 1800 words. It's space opera. Definitely a departure from my usual haunts of sword-and-sorcery and (increasingly) horror.

I'd like to write more science fiction, but it's too depressing. Science fiction by nature speculates about the future (hence the term "speculative fiction"), and these days it's quite hard to imagine a future that's not apocalyptic, dystopian, or both. Not that the future will necessarily be dystopian; it's the mood of the times, I suppose. People in the 14th and 15th centuries were convinced the world would end within 50 years or so, and look at out that turned out.

But, for now, space opera it is.
