The Inaugural Entry (Or, breaking a champagne bottle against the blog)
Dec. 20th, 2004 | 12:28 am
So here we are at the kick-off entry for the Official Jonathan Moeller blog. It's ironic; no one will read it, because I haven't told anyone about it, I don't have a home page yet, and none of my books have been officially released yet. But a true writer is never daunted by such miniscule obstacles as non-existent readership.
Why have I started this blog? Three reasons. First, book promotions. If you've read my bio, you know I have two books coming out from fairly small publishers. Blatant and Shameless Self-Promotion is an essential tool for any writer with books coming out from a small publisher, and a blog seemed like as good a means of Shameless Self-Promotion as any. Buy my book! When it comes out!
Second, either later today or tomorrow, I'm going to start a new novel (my eighth, incidentally), "The Black Paladin". I thought it might make for an interesting exercise if I chronicled the long, hard, tedious (but nonetheless exciting) work of writing a novel in a blog-form. (I think Neil Gaiman might have done this already with "American Gods", a novel far superior to anything I've written). And when writing a novel, I'm obsessed with Daily Word Count; I'll say things like "I wrote 2,591 words today" in a tone of deepest pride, or "I wrote only 893 words today" with profound shame. With this blog, I'll have a space (in the virtually-created digital non-space sense) to report this neurotic fixation with word-count.
Third, I submit a lot of short stories to various markets, and consequently get a LOT of rejection letters. Though it's considered unprofessional to list places that have rejected your work, I thought I would post the rejection letters (with appropriate references scrubbed) as a sort of public service to interested persons, to see that rejection letters are not the end of the universe and so forth. And, as a corollary to Reason #1, when I actually *do* sell something, I can announce it here with great fanfare. ("I sold something! Buy it!")
That said, here's the first of the (usually) Daily News:
-Currently have a short story up at Scorched Earth Press, a 4theluv mag managed by some friends of mine. Interested persons (or those just plain bored), can view it here:
http://www.scorchedearthpublishing.c om/relic.htm
-Wrote the rough pseudo-outline for "The Black Paladin". Normally, I write out a crude skeleton outline and add to it as I go. We'll see how it works out this time.
-Contemplated a science fiction idea for an upcoming anthology. It has to do with aliens running the earth, masked anonymous jurors, and electronic memory modification. I think it might work. Then again, it might not be outlandish enough. Maybe I should add some mutant cockroaches for atmosphere.
That's all today.
