writing the 21st century
Good progress on the book, I'm pleased to say. 12,500 words and 4 chapters, so far.

I'm finding that it's a lot easier to write a book set in the 21st century than a story set in a fantasy or science fiction world. You don't have to explain the rules of the game. People already know how things work in 21st century America.* A properly-designed fantasy world will have its own physical laws, its own cultures, nations, and species, and its own social structures, and you've got to explain it all without taking up sixteen pages in an As You Know Bob exposition.

Don't follow me? Take the following examples. This is kind of how you'd have to write an unknown bit of magic or technology in an sf/f book:

"Tom piloted his green, flame-fueled chariot along the path of ebony stone. Ahead, jutting from the earth atop a pole of iron, he saw an eight-sided crimson sigil emblazoned with characters in the natives' tongue. Local custom and law decreed that one must come to a halt for a brief moment before the octagonal blazon. Fearing retribution, Tom let his chariot come to a halt, then resumed his journey along the glistening black path."

Now, the exact same event in the 21st century:

"Tom drove his green Ford Taurus through the intersection."

See? Way easier.

*Or so they think. The Illuminati and the space aliens are the ones really running things.

How not to lose me mind...

Enjoyed your piece on "How not to lose your mind on message boards" although I think I've violated a couple of your rules by a) getting people riled up and b) taking on trolls. But it can suck away your writing time and that I very much resent so I have been curbing such activities. Plus I find there's a depressing similarity with people who hang out on forums/chatrooms, etc. They develop a herd instinct which can quickly develop into a mob instinct if you happen to shoot one of their sacred cows, dress it and serve it back to them in the form of hamburger or steaming cuts of meat. Diversity of opinion is NOT one of the hallmarks of these forums, despite the lip service folks like to pay to the concept. You disagree, you get FLAMED. Great site, Jonathan, lots of thought and energy went into it and it's very nice to look at.

Apologies, I hit the "Post Comment" button without properly identifying myself before sending my previous comment. I NEVER post anonymously or use a pseudonym, I think it's a gutless thing to do.

I quite agree. I figure if you're going to say something, say it under your own name, and if you're hesitant to speak with your own name, maybe you'd better rethink what you were going to say.

These days, I tend to read blogs more than message boards. Arguing with random strangers over the Internet rapidly loses its appeal. Besides, it's much more fun to watch other people argue.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words on the site.
